Confusion Surrounds Browns QB Chedure Sanders’ Preseason Performance
There’s a lot of buzz around Browns quarterback Chedure Sanders lately.
The rookie quarterback, who’s already generating strong opinions, was unexpectedly pulled from the game when the Browns were trailing the Rams 17-16 in their last preseason match. With just under two minutes remaining, the team opted to switch to veteran Tyler Huntley instead of allowing Sanders a chance to lead a two-minute drill.
Huntley managed to drive the team for a last-minute field goal, clinching a 19-17 win, but was subsequently released.
Despite the controversy, Sanders is anticipated to secure a spot on the Browns’ roster.
The decision to bench Sanders prompted significant backlash from various analysts and former NFL players, who were left scratching their heads. Coach Kevin Stefanski’s choice was met with skepticism.
Former NFL quarterback and current analyst Derek Carr voiced his frustration on social media, wondering why the team wouldn’t let Sanders demonstrate his potential in such a key situation. “Shouldn’t you let your young QB take those reps? Has he not shown enough already?” he questioned.
Hall of Famer Kurt Warner echoed similar sentiments, lamenting the lack of playing time for both Sanders and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. “It’s disappointing that they both didn’t get the same chances. They could’ve pushed each other,” Warner remarked in a social media post.
Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com pressed Stefanski about the implications of this decision. He responded, “I’m dedicated to developing all our rookies. We’ll keep working on improving them, as that’s what truly matters.”
Stefanski is navigating a complicated quarterback situation that includes Sanders and Gabriel, the latter being drafted ahead of Sanders in the earlier rounds.
Last week, the Browns named Joe Flacco as their starting quarterback, with Kenny Pickett, who faced his own challenges during preseason, expected to back him up.
Former ESPN reporter Jocina Anderson also remarked on the questionable handling of Sanders during the preseason, noting that he mainly played with lower-tier teammates.
In the game against the Rams, Sanders struggled significantly, finishing with just three completions for a meager 14 yards while suffering five sacks. His total yardage for the game was a troubling minus 27 across five drives.
Prior to this game, Sanders had shown more promise in the Browns’ first preseason outing but missed the second due to an oblique injury.
Post-game, Sanders expressed gratitude to his supporters via Instagram, saying, “Thank you to everyone! There’s a lot to learn from this preseason, but I’m really grateful for the opportunity. I keep learning and getting better every day.”
