US Open Upset: Bonji Outlasts Medvedev
Tennis fans witnessed a surprising twist at the US Open as Benjamin Bonji took on Danil Medvedev, creating a match filled with tension and drama. In the end, Bonji triumphed with scores of 6-3, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 0-6, 6-4, but not without some controversy.
The match faced a delay of over six minutes when Medvedev protested a call made by chair umpire Greg Allensworth. Medvedev was frustrated after a photographer entered the court, which he believed disrupted play at a critical moment. The official instructed the photographer to leave, but Medvedev felt that the situation warranted a different decision.
“He clearly just wants to wrap things up,” Medvedev remarked about the chair umpire. “No one enjoys being here under these conditions.” His annoyance was palpable as he expressed that the short break was hardly sufficient to reset the game.
Following the incident, a representative from the American Tennis Association confirmed that the photographer was removed from the venue and would no longer have access during the tournament.
Medvedev elaborated on his grievances, stating, “The delay was maybe four and a half seconds. I’m not sure that’s enough time before a serve.” He also mentioned past criticisms he had about judging decisions made by others, which seemed to be a recurring theme for him.
Bonji, on the other hand, pointed out that Medvedev’s reactions may have escalated the situation. “The rules are clear,” he said. “The interruption wasn’t my doing, and it felt like he fueled the fire with his complaints.”
This victory marks a significant achievement for Bonji, who previously reached the third round of the US Open in 2023 and holds one career title. The match, though, will likely be remembered for the series of events off the court as much as the play on it.
