Casper Ruud dislikes the smell of marijuana at the US Open

US Open Atmosphere Brings Mixed Reactions

There’s a unique vibe in the air in the US right now.

The food stands are alive with various smells, and there’s a buzz of anticipation as the final Grand Slam kicks off for two weeks, setting the stage for two new champions.

However, for Casper Ruud, there’s something less appealing that stands out to him.

During the Retool Mix Doubles Tournament, while playing alongside Iga Swiatek, the Norwegian was not impressed by the scent of cannabis wafting around the court.

“Honestly, this is the worst part of being in New York for me,” Ruud expressed in an interview with Norwegian media. “The smell sticks to everything, even here at the courthouse. While we have to accept it, I just don’t like it.”

He added, “It’s really frustrating—you’re playing, maybe feeling tired, and right there, just a few meters away, someone is smoking marijuana. It’s something we can’t control unless the law changes, but I’m pretty skeptical about that.”

Ruud and Swiatek reached the finals last week but ultimately fell to defending champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori.

While smoking is prohibited at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center during this 145th edition of the tournament, New York legalized recreational cannabis back in 2021.

Ruud isn’t alone in his concerns. Greek player Maria Sakkari voiced similar frustrations in 2023, noting that the smell affected her focus during a match against Rebekah Masarova, which she lost in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

“Sometimes, you get whiffs of food, cigarettes, and cannabis,” Sakkari remarked. “But it’s something we can’t manage since we’re outdoors. There’s a park right behind us, and people will do what they want. It’s beyond our control.”

Ruud is set to compete in a singles match against Sebastian Ofner on Monday night.
