Contreras Ejected in Dramatic Fashion

Wilson Contreras had quite the meltdown during the Cardinals’ opening game against the Pirates. He was thrown out in the seventh inning and had to be restrained by his manager after getting into a heated exchange with the umpire. In a moment of frustration, he accidentally hit his coach with his bat as he reacted to a third strike call.

The game saw St. Louis leading Pittsburgh 6-5 when Contreras approached umpire Derek Thomas at home plate.

As he walked toward the ump, it was clear that he turned back to say something, clearly frustrated.

Contreras continued to confront Thomas, despite Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol attempting to pull him away. The situation escalated when Contreras slammed his helmet into the ground and shouted at the referee.

Bench coach Daniel Descalso tried to guide him toward the dugout, but in a moment of anger, Contreras threw his bat, inadvertently hitting coach Blunt Brown in the process.

Once things started to calm down, a bucket of bubblegum was tossed onto the field, spilling its contents all over the first baseline.

Ultimately, Marmol also got ejected from the game during this altercation.

Crew Chief Jordan Baker mentioned that both Contreras and Marmol were thrown out for using “vulgar” language, although he wasn’t close enough to hear everything that was said during the incident.

Baker later told reporters that he was aware of Contreras’s contact with the umpire but wasn’t able to ascertain his exact intentions.

Despite the drama, the Cardinals managed to win the game, securing a victory in a four-game series against the Pirates. They currently find themselves 5½ games away from a National League wild card spot.
