Australian Government Ousts Iranian Diplomats

The Australian government has expelled two Iranian diplomats, asserting that Iran was involved in at least two anti-Semitic attacks in Sydney and Melbourne. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese addressed reporters, stating that the country’s domestic spy agency, Asio, had compiled reliable intelligence leading to this troubling conclusion.

“The Iranian government has directed at least two of these attacks,” Albanese mentioned, referencing recent assaults on restaurants in Sydney and synagogues in Melbourne. He expressed that Tehran has attempted to conceal its role, but Asio believes it is indeed implicated.

In a move prior to the announcement, the Australian government informed the Iranian ambassador of these developments, alongside retracting Australian diplomats from Iran who had been listed as third countries.

Increase in Anti-Semitic Incidents

Following the massacre in Israel on October 7, 2023, anti-Semitic incidents in both Melbourne and Sydney have sharply increased. This surge coincided with continued Israeli military actions.

Additionally, Albanese indicated that Australia plans to label Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization.

Notably, this announcement comes just after Australia stated its intention to recognize Palestine at the UN General Assembly in September.

This action has led to strong criticism from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who accused Australia of betraying Israel. He stated, “History will remember Albanese for what he is: a weak politician who betrayed Israel and abandoned Australian Jews.”
