Reunion in Las Vegas
The Raiders have signed free agent wide receiver Amari Cooper to a one-year contract, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Monday.
Cooper, a five-time Pro Bowl player, was originally drafted by the Raiders in 2015 when they were still in Oakland.
This signing comes on the heels of reports that veteran wideout Jacobi Myers is seeking a trade amid contract negotiations.
Myers, who is 28, is looking for a new deal as he approaches the final year of his current contract, which has no guaranteed money left.
The Raiders, facing depth issues, seem reluctant to let go of Myers, especially after his breakout last season, where he registered 87 catches for 1,027 yards and four touchdowns.
Tre Tucker was the second top receiver for the Raiders last season, with 47 catches for 539 yards. The team also has rookies Don’t Thornton Jr. and Jack Bech, the latter of whom has seen more action with the second team during practice.
Cooper has consistently exceeded 1,000 yards in his first two seasons with the Raiders, accumulating 225 catches for 3,183 yards and 19 touchdowns before being traded to the Cowboys in 2018. He then moved to Cleveland before the 2022 season.
Though he joined the Bills last October with hopes of reaching the Super Bowl, a wrist injury during week 8 hindered his performance. In the eight games since joining, he recorded 20 receptions for 297 yards and two touchdowns but struggled in the postseason, finishing with just six catches for 41 yards in three games.
Last season marked Cooper’s most challenging year, ending with 547 yards, his lowest since entering the league, despite having a history of seven seasons with over 1,000 yards.
Now back with the Raiders, Cooper will have less than two weeks to build rapport with quarterback Geno Smith ahead of their first road game against the Patriots.
