At a Democratic National Committee (DNC) summer meeting in Minneapolis, representatives from the VERA Judicial Institute highlighted that discussions around “immigrant crimes” might not resonate with most Americans. They suggested that people are generally more focused on pressing issues such as homelessness and mental health instead.
One speaker pointed out, “Where is Trump going? Immigration crime, carjacking—it’s just intense, really.” They emphasized, “Don’t take the bait because most Americans are genuinely more concerned about handling mental health issues and visible homelessness in our streets, along with other factors that can lead to unsettling incidents.”
During the meeting, Democrats also approved a land acknowledgment recognizing the Dakotaoyate as “the original stewards of land and waters” in Minneapolis. Lindy Suumik spoke at the event and unpacked this acknowledgment further.
VERA Judicial Institute has longstanding ties to billionaire George Soros. It focuses on immigration and criminal justice reform, receiving substantial financial backing connected to Soros. Some group initiatives have received fellowships from Soros’ Open Society Foundation, which has been active in promoting open societies and granted over $11 million to the Vera Institute alone since 2016.
Reports from July 2022 detailed that the group could receive a $171.7 million federal contract from President Joe Biden’s administration, potentially totaling nearly $1 billion by 2027. This funding would be directed toward legal representation for unaccompanied alien children in deportation cases.
Financial audits reveal that the VERA Institute’s primary revenue source comes from government grants and contracts, reportedly amounting to $152 million from taxpayer-sourced funds from July 2020 to June 2021. Additionally, cities like Philadelphia have partnerships aimed at providing free legal aid to undocumented immigrants facing deportation.
Rep. Dina Titus (D-NV) recently expressed that Democrats ought to steer their messaging away from focusing solely on Donald Trump. Instead, she suggested creating a clear policy agenda, framing it as a “contract with the US” detailing what they would do for economic issues if they regained control. She stressed the importance of outlining the negative aspects of Trump while promoting their own vision.
Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio commented on how Democrats should approach crime. He mentioned that the party must be more transparent about their weaknesses. “We need to acknowledge that there are areas where we could improve, and our leadership should reflect that,” he said. De Blasio cautioned against relying solely on military force and the National Guard for crime reduction in cities, highlighting the need to build trust between law enforcement and communities.
On the Republican side, there have been criticisms of Democratic messaging efforts. The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) recently branded House Democrats’ Project 2026 platform as “roughly unpopular,” implying the party is quickly reverting to the conditions of the Biden era. They mocked Democratic proposals related to spending and crime, suggesting it was a distraction from leadership failures.
