The New Democrats’ stance on immigration is just like that of the Old Democrats.

The New Democrats' stance on immigration is just like that of the Old Democrats.

The New Democrats’ Union, which labels itself as a “central left” group, claims to aim for unity across party lines with a solution-focused political stance. Recently, they unveiled a “new plan” intended to bolster border security and reform immigration policies.

However, this plan doesn’t bring anything genuinely “new” to the table. It lacks practicality and fails to address the significant divide between individuals like Oprah and the influences of the Chamber of Commerce, which often relies on cheap labor from immigrants.

Their press release details the situation:

problem: Relying heavily on mass deportations proves unsustainable in the long run. It’s essential to hold those guilty of violent crimes responsible. Emphasizing enforcement aimed at law-abiding individuals diminishes trust in law enforcement and redirects resources away from combating actual crime. Long-term investments crucial for border security and proper immigration law enforcement also cannot be achieved.

The facts, however, seem to contradict this view. The existing law clearly mandates that illegal entry into the United States should result in deportation. Interestingly, halting enforcement only deepens distrust in law enforcement. Over the past several decades, neglect of the law has allowed millions of undocumented individuals to settle in the country.

I certainly don’t want to revert to the circumstances that led us to this current dilemma.

If a legal resident, spouse of a US citizen, and parents of a US citizen have been living in the U.S. for over three years, the plan suggests creating a pathway for undocumented immigrants who entered when they were 18 or older. They need to hold a temporary legal status for five years, pass a criminal background check, avoid felony convictions, and either be enrolled in school or working full-time.

This just feels like we’re edging back towards incentivizing illegal immigration with programs that seem more like pardons. It almost appears that if one can evade detection long enough, they could achieve legal status and citizenship—certainly not a great plan for maintaining order.

Then there’s the proposal that various governmental departments should align more closely with the labor needs of local communities, considering the skills of immigrants, and construct a national strategy to create actionable plans.

But what about efforts to align American workers with the skills that employers actually need?

The essence of this proposal boils down to a few troublesome points:

  • The laws regarding deportation have not been adequately enforced.
  • The nation is inundated with cheap labor.
  • This undermines the wages and job opportunities for American workers.
  • The actions of those breaking the law are being shielded by legalization.

So, we seem to be heading back to a problematic situation that has weakened American labor for years. Plus, we observe that certain political players are manipulating census data to include undocumented individuals, aimed at retaining votes and congressional representation.

Even if you find some merit in this new approach from the Democrats, do you genuinely believe that they will suddenly enforce stricter measures against illegal immigrants who commit crimes? Their champions are often individuals with questionable backgrounds.

Under Trump, about 1.6 million foreigners were deported or self-reported, and this situation has been heavily politicized.

Democrats have had opportunities to deal with illegal foreign offenders but opted not to. Who would trust them again, considering their track record?

Our Vision: The New Democrats echo the sentiments of many Americans—our country has lagged in providing certainty, stability, and opportunities to dreamers and those under Temporary Protected Status. These individuals contribute daily by being educated, working, and paying taxes. Countless small businesses depend on them for a skilled and reliable workforce. With the TCP protections ending, these individuals face increased vulnerability to oppression and violence.

Not really. Everyone needs to be accounted for and leave. Many of these so-called dreamers are here unlawfully; isn’t the term “Temporary” somewhat confusing as well?

What the “new Democrats” propose isn’t actually new. They aim to tap into the workforce at the expense of American workers, affecting housing markets and schooling opportunities for U.S. children. It feels like a strategy designed to inflate the number of voters for Democrats.

Deportation should be enforced for all. That’s the law. If you want to alter the existing laws, then win the elections needed to make those changes. While the New Democrats suggest reforms, they’re also indicating a disregard for existing deportation laws.
