Swiatek’s Joyful Day at the US Open
Iga Swiatek was in high spirits on Tuesday afternoon, and her straightforward first-round win at the US Open certainly contributed to her upbeat demeanor.
She easily defeated Emiliana Alango with a score of 6-1, 6-2 at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Adding to the excitement, news broke that pop sensation Taylor Swift is engaged to Chiefs tight end Travis Kelsey.
Shortly after the announcement, her team shared Swift’s Instagram posts, quickly reaching out to friends who are fellow fans.
“Well, she deserves the best, so I’m happy for her,” Swiatek remarked at a press conference. “We know a lot about her love life, considering she’s had a number of relationships. I hope this one lasts. Travis seems like a great guy, and she looks genuinely happy.”
The media erupted in laughter, prompting Swiatek to pause and then quip, “What about the laughter? She will.” It was a lighthearted moment.
Much of Swiatek’s media engagements revolve around her admiration for Swift and her music, understandable for a six-time Grand Slam champion. She discussed her evolving fandom, noting how, in 2017, she wasn’t particularly keen on “Reputation,” yet found herself drawn back in by “Folklore” and “Evermore.”
Recently, she tuned into a podcast featuring Travis and Jason Kelce, probably hoping to glean some insights for her next album. Maybe that’ll lead to something interesting.
Update on Taylor Swift and Travis Kelsey
When the conversation shifted back to tennis, Swiatek humorously replied, “No,” when asked if she could discuss it instead. The press conference concluded fittingly with inquiries about when she heard the news about Swift.
“She posted right after I finished,” Swiatek said with a hint of intrigue. “Maybe that’s not a coincidence. I don’t know.”
Surprising Upset of the Day
One unexpected twist during the day was Ashlyn Kruger’s impressive comeback against No. 26 seed Sofia Kenin, winning 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. Kruger showed resilience by breaking Kenin’s serve seven times—three times in that final set alone. Her winning tally was 29 to Kenin’s 16.
At just 21, Kruger achieved her best Grand Slam results last year at the US Open, advancing to the third round and defeating Mira Andreva, who was seeded 21st. Next up for Kruger is an unseeded matchup against Jacqueliner on Thursday.
