September iPhone update worries Republican fundraisers about text filtering

Upcoming updates to the iPhone are causing concern among Republican fundraisers. They claim that a new text filtration system, set to launch in September, may disproportionately hinder conservative fundraising and outreach efforts, echoing patterns seen in past controversies affecting GOP voters.

Sean Dollman, a founding partner at American Made Media Company, noted that it’s hardly surprising that tech giants might attempt to limit communication for Donald Trump and other Republicans, given their previous measures such as suspensions and outright bans.

Apple’s intended release of iOS 26 includes a revamped text filtration system. This system will filter out messages from unknown numbers that lack any prior interaction, while texts from known contacts will continue to be delivered in regular messaging apps.

In a previous instance, the Gmail Censorship reportedly cost Republican candidates around $2 billion from 2019 to 2022, according to findings by the National Republican Senate Committee. It appears that this current filtration system may impact not just political messages, but also discussions about various other issues, including appointments not saved in a user’s contacts.

LaunchPad Strategies, which supports the Trump 2024 campaign digitally, says it raised a significant amount of money during the 2024 election cycle. With the scheduled update, there are concerns that it may further alter the landscape of voter engagement.

The filtering is already being implemented under iOS 18, but it’s not activated by default. Users typically have to change settings manually. The upcoming update will introduce a feature termed “Screen unknown senders,” streamlining how users can access filtered messages.

Republican fundraisers are concerned that this new system could mirror issues faced with email communications, where a significant percentage of fundraising emails fail to reach recipients. Research suggests that this has severely impacted GOP fundraising, leading to missed opportunities in previous election cycles.

Despite these challenges, fundraisers are devising strategies to keep their communication channels open, such as saving their contact information directly to user phones. Messages promoting Trump’s outreach are likely to include familiar prompts encouraging recipients to save his number and interact directly.
