Kansas City Chiefs Wide Receiver Laci Rice Suspended for Six Games
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Laci Rice has been suspended for six games due to a breach of the NFL’s personal conduct policy.
This decision follows serious charges stemming from a crash in March 2024 on the Dallas Highway, where Rice faced two third-degree felony charges. The case involved a collision that resulted in significant injuries and a reported race on the highway.
Rice will miss the first six games of the season, starting with the season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil.
Interestingly, it seems Rice is not planning to appeal this suspension, as it directly correlates with an investigation linked to his criminal charges. As part of a judicial agreement, he was sentenced to 30 days in prison, combined with five years of deferred probation.
The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office stated that Rice’s prison hours could be adjusted if necessary.
Additionally, an arbitration hearing set for September 30 was aimed at discussing the suspension at league headquarters in New York, which might have allowed him to play in the early weeks of the Chiefs’ season. However, with this suspension now in place, that prospect has vanished.
Besides missing the game against the Chargers, Rice will also be absent for a rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles in week two—an especially notable game since it marks Kansas City’s home opener following their Super Bowl victory. He will also not participate in the matchups against the New York Giants (Week 3), Baltimore Ravens (Week 4), Jacksonville Jaguars (Week 5), and Detroit Lions (Week 6).
The 25-year-old is eligible to return in Week 7 when the Chiefs face the Las Vegas Raiders on October 19.
In a statement released via his attorney, Rice expressed regret, acknowledging, “There are many sleepless nights thinking about the damages my actions have caused. I will continue to work within my means and ensure everyone is taken care of.”
During the Chiefs’ training camp, Rice had limited availability but was permitted to practice. He commented on his transformation, stating, “I’ve completely changed. You have to learn from that. All I can focus on is what I have control over now, and that’s what I do.”
Prosecutors reported that he was driving a Lamborghini Urus at 119 mph while actively navigating traffic on the North Central Expressway in Dallas. After the collision, Rice reportedly fled the scene on foot without checking on those involved.
As part of his plea agreement, Rice is also obligated to compensate the victim approximately $115,000.
It’s notable, too, that Rice had a breakout rookie season in 2023, contributing alongside Patrick Mahomes to secure another Super Bowl title against the San Francisco 49ers. However, his 2024 season has been marred by injuries. He suffered LCL tears after an interception in Week 4, which he sustained when Mahomes fell on him during a tackle attempt.
