Trump intensifies efforts to seize control in DC

President Trump has expanded his influence in Washington, D.C., seizing control of various law enforcement agencies, transportation hubs, and key cultural sites.

He has called for the death penalty for murders occurring in D.C. and is committed to clearing out homeless encampments while ensuring security for everything from fences to lights, which he deems crucial for the city’s reputation.

On Wednesday, the Transportation Secretary announced the government’s takeover of Union Station’s management, where the National Guard has been deployed for several weeks now.

This move reflects Trump’s ongoing efforts to permeate the city’s main institutions and landmarks, according to sources familiar with the administration.

“Trump is on solid political ground with this approach. But as September approaches, other challenges are likely to arise,” one insider noted.

Meanwhile, Mayor Muriel Bowser has attempted to portray a cooperative relationship with federal authorities. After speaking with Trump on Wednesday, she mentioned his support for the management of Union Station and investments in urban development.

“The president’s interest in the city has grown significantly since his time in the White House,” Bowser stated during a briefing.

Earlier this month, the president announced the federal takeover of local police stations and deployed National Guard troops across the city. He has expressed confidence in the success of federal law enforcement in making D.C. safer.

Republicans in Congress have consistently sought to increase federal control over D.C., but a recent incident involving Trump’s former efficiency staff appears to have been a breaking point.

The federal government has the authority to oversee district police stations, yet the Trump administration is pushing boundaries further, deploying federal agents, including immigration enforcement, throughout the city.

Trump has made it clear that his administration aims to reduce crime, proposing the reinstatement of the death penalty for murders in D.C. Although the Supreme Court invalidated the death penalty in the district back in 1972, the federal government could still technically instate it.

“If someone commits murder in our nation’s capital, we will pursue the death penalty. It’s a serious deterrent,” he remarked.

While he expressed intentions to address crime in other Democratic-controlled cities, he also called for local leaders to collaborate with him. Additionally, he mentioned working on a crime bill with key Republican figures.

The Transport Bureau’s announcement regarding Union Station management came as officials highlighted the location as a hotspot for crime and homelessness.

“The president is genuinely worried about the crime in the capital. He wants it to reflect the greatness of our nation,” commented Transport Secretary Sean Duffy regarding the move. “This includes ensuring a clean, safe city that isn’t overrun by homeless encampments.”

Beyond crime, Trump is also looking into other aspects of the city. He began assessing the Smithsonian Museum earlier this month, citing issues with exhibits he considers “woke.” Critics claim he is attempting to distort history.

He has also made multiple visits to the Kennedy Center this month, where he announced winners for annual awards and discussed potential aesthetic improvements. Earlier this year, Trump took over the Kennedy Center board, seeking to revitalize the cultural institution.

Additionally, he expressed plans to invest in urban management, suggesting that Congress allocate $2 billion to enhance and beautify the city.

“We’re looking to replace a lot of the asphalt and improve median values throughout D.C.,” he said, aiming for a more attractive landscape.

He also claimed that the city could reach new standards of beauty, likening it to Augusta, the Georgia golf course known for hosting the Masters.

“We’re going to rejuvenate all the parks rapidly. It’s going to be remarkable,” he proclaimed while visiting federal law enforcement officials.

Nonetheless, it remains uncertain if Trump’s initiatives are truly embraced by the predominantly liberal city. Polls indicate a significant disapproval of his decision to deploy the National Guard, with some residents expressing their dissatisfaction through local protests.

“I believe D.C. residents are focused on maintaining local autonomy and their rights,” Bowser noted. “They care deeply about their community and want to ensure their voices are heard.”
