Rookies Lead the Mets to Victory
The Mets made a significant move in the NL East race last night. However, one standout performance stole the show: Nolan McLean’s dominating presence against the Phillies was truly remarkable.
In just his third MLB start, McLean delivered eight shutout innings, allowing only four singles in a 6-0 win, which completed a three-game sweep against Philadelphia.
With this victory, the Mets have now won five out of six games after a setback in Washington. They are inching closer to the NL East lead, now just four games behind.
Looking ahead, the Mets will face the Marlins in a four-game series starting Thursday. Excitingly, rookie pitcher Jonaton is expected to make his MLB debut on Friday.
McLean’s efficiency was remarkable; he required only 93 pitches to keep hitters like Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper at bay.
The Phillies didn’t really put up a fight against him until late in the game. After eight innings, McLean exited to a standing ovation, having lowered his ERA to an impressive 0.89.
Offensively, the Mets took the lead early, scoring three runs in the first three innings, thanks to a string of five hits against Taijuan Walker.
Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, and Pete Alonso contributed with RBI singles after Brett Baty’s double, but it was Mark Vientos who had a bit of a mishap when he grounded into a double play.
Despite that slip, Vientos made up for it later, extending the lead to 4-0 with another RBI single. Alonso walked, and Nemo managed to get a single right before Vientos came to the plate.
And then, to top it all off, Vientos hit a two-run homer in the eighth, marking his sixth home run in just ten games. It was quite the performance overall.
