A harrowing video captures the moment an 8-year-old boy from New Jersey remarkably leaps into the arms of a police officer after escaping a rapidly spreading fire in his home.
The Asbury Park Police Department responded to the blaze, which had originated from a first-floor window, around 8:45 AM Monday. When officers arrived, they were informed that there were still people inside as flames engulfed the residence.
Officers John Walsh and DeWitt Bacon quickly joined a local resident, Joseph Dunbar, and rushed to the house’s side upon hearing the boy’s cries for help.
Body cam footage revealed the tense moments as they realized the child was trapped upstairs.
With urgency, Officer Walsh directed the boy to “push out” as he struggled to open the window.
Finally, the frightened boy managed to extricate himself partially from the screen but hesitated to jump, hanging precariously with one foot outside.
“Jump! I’ve got you, mate,” Walsh urged, as time was running out.
As the smoke billowed toward him, the boy summoned his courage and jumped, landing safely in Walsh’s arms, far from the danger below.
After the rescue, he was taken to a nearby hospital to treat smoke inhalation.
Both the officer and Dunbar received commendations for their “heroic actions” in a highly stressful moment.
Asbury Park Police Director John B. Hayes remarked on the bravery shown by everyone involved, especially the young boy who took that leap of faith.
Dunbar shared his experience, expressing the urgency he felt to act when he noticed the fire. “I couldn’t let anyone else suffer while I was there,” he recalled.
With a touch of humor, Walsh noted, “Catching an 8-year-old wasn’t part of the plan that day,” but he leaned into his training. He likened the catch to snagging a football. “That’s what we did,” he said, grateful for the child’s trust in him.
While the boy was alone at home during the incident, his mother was at work. Two residents from the unit below managed to evacuate on their own.
The Asbury Park Fire Department reported that there were no fatal or serious injuries and is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
