Sabalenka Comments on Ostapenko-Townsend Clash
After Aryna Sabalenka’s second victory over Taylor Townsend at the US Open on Wednesday, she had an unexpected conversation with Jelena Ostapenko, completely unaware of the tension that had just unfolded between the two players.
Currently ranked No. 1, Sabalenka noted she has distanced herself from discussions surrounding Ostapenko, who seems to be grappling with personal issues that might affect her focus.
“I think she’s capable, but she can lose it sometimes,” Sabalenka mentioned. “I was trying to help her stay composed because… I feel she sometimes struggles to handle her emotions. I hope she can figure things out for herself one day.”
Following the match, fireworks ignited between Townsend and Ostapenko due to some comments made by the Latvian player. Townsend, having won the match 7-5, 6-1, spoke about the aftermath, saying, “People tend to get upset after losing, but some words go too far. She accused me of lacking class and education, which I found surprising.”
In a post on her Instagram story, Ostapenko shared her perspective, claiming Townsend disrespected the rules of tennis. “After our match, I tried to express my disappointment at a pivotal moment when she didn’t acknowledge her error, but her response was that she owed me no apology. There are certain norms we follow in tennis, and this was new territory for me,” she said.
Townsend, however, dismissed the need to apologize. “If you expect someone to say sorry and you’re upset when they don’t, that’s on you, not me,” she stated confidently.
Sabalenka seemed to imply there are deeper issues at play, suggesting that off-court struggles inevitably impact on-court performance. “When personal life issues arise, they can definitely spill over into your game. It’s tough to be consistent when you’re dealing with instability,” she added.
With this win, Townsend is set to advance to the third round, where she will face fifth-seeded Mira Andreva. Sabalenka, the tournament’s top seed, will also be competing against Leila Fernandez on the same day.
