Christina Applegate Opens Up About MS Diagnosis and Its Impact on Her Daughter

Christina Applegate recently shared how her multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis in 2021 has profoundly affected her daughter, Sadie, who is now 14. On the “Transparent” podcast, which she co-hosts with Jamie Lynn Sigler, Applegate opened up about the challenges her health issues have posed for her family.

Applegate explained that Sadie had always known her as a vibrant, active person—someone who enjoyed running, dancing, and a full life. When her diagnosis came, Sadie faced a harsh reality. “She was stoic about it at first,” Applegate said. Yet, as time passed, the changes became clearer. “Now, I often find myself in bed, unable to move, which is hard for her to see,” she added, reflecting on the drastic changes in her daily activities.

Hospitalizations and Struggles

Since her MS diagnosis, Applegate has been hospitalized more than 30 times. She expressed concern, saying the situation would only worsen over time for both her and her daughter. “It felt like she was losing the mother she once knew,” Applegate stated. Experiencing significant life changes together—like dealing with Covid and school—has complicated their relationship.

Despite the difficulties, Applegate noted a touching aspect of their bond. “When we’re out, she’s aware of my struggles,” she said, sharing that Sadie often takes her arm to provide support. “It’s really beautiful how she tries to help me in those moments,” Applegate added.

Facing Challenges Together

The actress described how Sadie expresses concern as they navigate their daily lives. “She says, ‘You’re down every step,’ and I respond, ‘Sadie, I can’t even make it a step.’” This candid exchange shows the gravity of their situation and the emotional toll it takes.

Reflecting on her mental health, Applegate admitted to feeling a deep sense of depression that she hadn’t experienced for years. “I’ve been in this darkness, and it’s daunting,” she said, revealing her discomfort with the emotional weight that comes with her illness. “Honestly, I don’t enjoy life the way I used to.”

Future Considerations

Applegate has become accustomed to frequent hospital visits, sharing her fatigue with a hint of humor. “After three years since my diagnosis, it’s hard to believe how much I’ve been through.” She recounted the extensive medical tests and treatments, highlighting the physical toll MS can take on one’s body. “It feels like my organs are slowing down,” she explained.

Even with the challenges, Applegate continues to find humor in her situation, joking about practical adjustments to her daily routine—a testament to her resilience in the face of adversity.

Through these struggles, Sadie and Applegate’s relationship exemplifies love and support in challenging times, showcasing the complexities of family dynamics amid serious health issues.
