Minneapolis School Shooting: A Mother’s Struggles

The mother of a 12-year-old girl injured in a Minneapolis school shooting was working in intensive care when she learned about the incident affecting her daughter’s school, as detailed by fundraising efforts on her behalf.

Sofia Fortus’ mother was employed at Hennepin Healthcare on that fateful Wednesday. She works as a pediatric emergency nurse, which was confirmed by various sources. It seems, while she was caring for others, her own daughter needed urgent help.

According to updates on social media, one of the young victims of the tragic shooting is fighting for her life at the same hospital where her mother works.

Fundraisers indicate that Sofia was critically hurt during the attack. Reports from a Greek Orthodox monk at St. Mary confirm the severity of her injuries. Her younger brother, Anthony, was at school during the event but was fortunately unharmed. At the moment, the fundraising page has garnered over $300,000.

Authorities revealed that police were summoned to the shooting at Minneapolis Announcement Church and Catholic Schools just before 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The shooter was armed with a rifle, shotgun, and pistol, and fired all three weapons during the attack, according to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara. In total, 20 individuals were injured, including young children, some of whom tragically lost their lives.

Fifteen children aged 6 to 15 sustained injuries, along with three adults who were also attacked during the chaotic event.

The perpetrator has been identified as Robin Westman, a transgender man formerly known as Robert Westman. Prior to the shooting, he reportedly posted an unsettling video online with phrases like “kill Donald Trump” and “for children,” along with a handwritten manifesto. This disturbing information was shared by authorities as they investigated the situation.

Westman expressed feelings of distress, claiming he was “fed up” with being transgender and wanted to escape his identity, according to a translation of his manifesto. He had changed his name to Robin in 2019, and his history is intertwined with the very school where this tragedy unfolded.
