Post-Match Drama at the US Open
The US Open is certainly heating up, and it’s taking on a bit of a WWE vibe with all the drama that unfolds after the matches.
Things got pretty intense around midnight when Stefanos Tsitsipas had some choice words for Daniel Altmaier following his second-round loss. It appeared that Tsitsipas was trying to vent his frustration in a rather unusual way.
“Next time, don’t wonder why I hit you, okay? Just saying, you might want to serve from a different spot,” he was caught saying, sounding like he didn’t quite mean what he was saying—or maybe he really did.
Tsitsipas also mentioned something about Altmaier serving “to the armpits,” to which Altmaier replied with a dismissive “too late” while trying to distance himself. It was surprisingly awkward—like, did he really just say that?
After that, Tsitsipas, clearly not done, repeated, “If you serve your armpits,” and made his way toward Altmaier, who seemed eager to escape the escalating tension.
The atmosphere was charged, and the crowd reacted accordingly. Initially, Tsitsipas faced booing but it quickly turned to cheers as Altmaier returned to the court victorious.
A commentary on the broadcast hinted at the underlying tension: “You knew this was coming. There’s definitely some friction here.” It’s clear Tsitsipas wasn’t too happy about Altmaier’s underhand serves, something that’s legal but rarely seen in high-stakes matches.
Interestingly, there were whispers about Tsitsipas perhaps having an on-court outburst aimed at Altmaier during the match as well. Altmaier clinched the match with a score of 7-6 (5), 1-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, using those controversial serves to his advantage.
In the aftermath, Altmaier expressed discomfort with such post-match exchanges. He recalled an earlier incident with Jelena Ostapenko and Taylor Townsend that mirrored his own experience.
“I understand that emotions run high in the moment, and words can slip out that you don’t mean,” Altmaier noted, reflecting on the situation. “It’s tough to communicate honestly when you’re caught up in the heat of it all, but hey, you have to find a way to cool off.” He seemed to handle it all with a level of maturity, suggesting that he’s fine if Tsitsipas holds onto his perspective.
Altmaier’s win means he advances to the third round for the first time in his career, where he’ll square off against eighth-seed Alex de Minaur this Saturday. Exhausted but elated, he conveyed his feelings by saying, “It’s hard to explain your feelings right away. Honestly, I feel a big relief… I left everything out there. I hope you enjoyed the show.”
