Mark Teixeira Launches Congressional Campaign, Sparks Liberal Backlash

Former New York Yankees player and World Series champion Mark Teixeira announced his campaign for the U.S. House on Thursday, which has provoked a strong response from some liberals.

While many of Teixeira’s long-time fans have rallied behind him for entering politics, his identification as a “lifetime conservative” and his campaign platform have drawn criticism from various left-leaning individuals. One user expressed disappointment on X, recalling a childhood admiration for Teixeira, but now labeling him as a “MAGA” figure. “I had his poster in my room and spent a lot on his jersey. My favorite Yankee has let me down,” the user lamented.

Another user echoed similar sentiments, calling Teixeira a “bad guy” because of his affiliation with the Republican Party.

Yet, it’s not all negative feedback. Many conservatives are excited about how Teixeira’s presence could influence Congressional baseball games, which the GOP has enjoyed success in over recent years. However, on Bluesky—a platform often used by liberals—criticism has escalated. One user quipped, “If you succeed 30% of the time with the bat, you’re considered a baseball star. Mark Teixeira: The Garbage Man,” highlighting the discontent.

Teixeira’s announcement aligns with Rep. Chip Roy’s decision to run for Texas Attorney General, leaving a vacancy in Texas’ 21st Congressional District, where Teixeira plans to run.

In his official statement, Teixeira expressed a commitment to uphold President Trump’s agenda and advocate for Texas families and their freedoms. “As a lifelong conservative and proud Texan, I am determined to strengthen Texas and fight for the principles that make America great,” he stated. He also commended Roy for his courageous representation of the district.

Having played 14 seasons in Major League Baseball, Teixeira debuted with the Texas Rangers in 2003 and is known for his time with the Yankees, where he was a key player on their 2009 World Series Championship team. His accolades include three Silver Slugger Awards and five Gold Glove awards, finishing his career with a batting average of .269 and 409 home runs.

The upcoming election is scheduled for November 2026.
