Julia Roberts Discusses Controversy Surrounding “After the Hunt”
Julia Roberts, at 57, may not be known for engaging in cultural debates, but she made headlines at the Venice Film Festival by addressing the backlash her new film, “After the Hunt,” is facing. During a press conference, she reflected on criticism regarding the film’s themes, particularly its approach to women’s support in sexual assault allegations.
A reporter pointed out that some viewers feel the film “revives old debates,” questioning the dynamics of women believing other women in such situations. Roberts responded, saying, “It’s not my nature, so it’s not uncomfortable.” She believes the film aims to spark discussions rather than pit women against each other.
“The biggest part of your question is that it came out of the theatres where you guys are talking about it,” she said, emphasizing that this reaction aligns with their intentions.
After further questioning, Roberts expressed concern about how “people are now losing the art of human conversation.” She remarked, “We have not made a statement. We portray these people at this moment. I don’t know about the controversy, but we’re challenging ourselves to engage in conversation.” She joked, “I love asking softball questions early in the morning,” attempting to lighten the mood.
Director Luca Guadanino also weighed in, noting that the film challenges viewers to see “a conflict of truth” without pushing a manifesto of outdated values.
The Venice Film Festival described “After the Hunt” as a gripping psychological drama that follows a university professor at a crossroads when a star student threatens to reveal a dark secret from her past.
Roberts mentioned that for her and the film’s team, the primary aim is to inspire conversations. The film is set for release in North America on October 10, and its promotional materials suggest that “Not everything is supposed to make you feel comfortable.”
