Doctor recommends these actions instead of dialing 9-1-1 for a child who is choking

Pediatricians have a crucial message for parents looking after their kids, especially those who might face terrifying situations.

Dr. Michael Mirobsky remained calm when his daughter started choking on a pizza crust, immediately recalling a vital skill that everyone really should know.

“The key thing every parent should master to potentially save their child’s life at home is managing choking,” he stated in a TikTok video shared on August 12th.

As a father of seven, he was fortunate to have utilized this technique for one of his children.

“I honestly believed it could have ended badly if I hadn’t known this,” he remarked. “It’s critical to recognize that choking is a situation that requires immediate action, as waiting for 9-1-1 could lead to lasting damage.”

To prevent choking, he advised against letting kids walk around while eating.

Mirovsky highlighted three essential points parents must be aware of when it comes to choking, emphasizing their importance in saving a child’s life.

No sweep

According to Milovsky, choking incidents often occur with infants who may have food in their mouths.

“Don’t just blindly stick your finger into your baby’s mouth,” he cautioned.

He explained that children’s airways resemble funnels rather than cylinders, meaning an object pushed further back can get firmly lodged and become difficult to remove.

So, it’s probably best to avoid poking around in their mouths unless you’re certain of what you’re doing.

Back blow

Another critical point is that if your child is coughin’ or making noise while choking, don’t intervene.

But, if they suddenly stop making sounds, that’s when you need to act—by delivering hard blows to the back.

These should be forceful hits in between the shoulder blades. “It’s going to feel really intense, almost like you’re being harsh, but it’s important,” he explained.

For years, the Heimlich maneuver has been the go-to response for choking, yet some studies have indicated that it could lead to rib or heart damage, among other complications. Striking firmly between the shoulder blades can be just as effective, but potentially less risky.

In 2023, statistics showed around 1.7 deaths per 100,000 in the U.S. due to suffocation.

If back blows don’t work, the next step is the abdominal thrust.

Abdominal lunge

For this, you would thrust upwards with your fist just beneath the breastbone.

Once you find that spot, push in as hard as possible, as if you’re trying to inflict a serious injury. It’s how he managed to save his daughter’s life.
