Federal Court of Appeals Rules on Trump’s Tariffs
The federal court of appeals made a ruling on Donald Trump’s tariffs this past Friday. However, the changes won’t take effect until October 14th, allowing the Trump administration a window to appeal to the Supreme Court.
According to Politico, the court decision potentially allows President Trump to eliminate the emergency powers that Congress had previously granted for imposing tariffs, which might affect billions in obligations. The ruling, which was passed by a 7-4 margin, creates uncertainty regarding agreements with major trading partners like the European Union, Japan, and South Korea. It also lowers the previously set mutual tariff rates on imports established by the administration back in April.
Trump mentioned that he believes “all tariffs are still in effect,” and acknowledged a mistake in suggesting that tariffs should be lifted. He expressed that, “For many years, tariffs have been used against us by our political leaders. Now, with the help of the U.S. Supreme Court, we will leverage them for the benefit of our nation, making America strong and prosperous!”
In a statement on True Society, he emphasized, “All customs duties remain in place! Today, a partisan court mistakenly claimed our tariffs should be removed, but they know the U.S. will ultimately prevail. If these tariffs are eliminated, it would be disastrous for the country. We can’t afford to be economically weak. The U.S. has dealt with significant trade deficits and unfair tariffs that undermine our manufacturers and farmers. This decision, if upheld, could truly harm the United States. As we head into Labor Day weekend, let’s remember that tariffs can be our best tool to support both workers and businesses that produce excellent products in America. We have the opportunity to make America rich and powerful once again! Thank you for paying attention to this important issue.”
