Emma Heming Willis Addresses Criticism of Bruce’s Care
Emma Heming Willis is standing firm against criticism regarding her decision to relocate her husband, Bruce Willis, during his frontotemporal dementia diagnosis.
The backlash started after the 47-year-old former model discussed the situation in her recent ABC special with Diane Sawyer, titled “Emma and Bruce Willis: An Unexpected Journey.” In the special, she explained why the “Die Hard” star is living in a nearby home specifically tailored to accommodate his needs.
Viewers took to social media, questioning why Bruce isn’t living full-time with his family. Some even suggested that Emma was intentionally distancing herself from him.
“The truth is that the opinions are very loud, and they’re very loud,” Emma expressed in a video posted on Instagram.
She emphasized her intention behind the special—to highlight the challenges of caregiving and foster a better understanding of the condition.
“I think they did a beautiful job amplifying the perceptions of FTD,” she noted.
Emma pointed out that sharing intimate details was meant to benefit those facing similar circumstances. “It’s probably people who have more opinions than people who have real experience,” she commented.
Critics didn’t hold back in their comments, and she responded, stating, “Too often, caregivers are judged promptly and unfairly by those who have not made this journey.”
She emphasized that while sharing experiences might invite scrutiny, the goal is to establish connections with others who understand the complexities of caregiving. “That’s what I share, to build a deeper connection with the community that understands this journey,” she concluded.
During the special, Emma explained that the choice to move Bruce was made “some time ago,” facilitating around-the-clock care for him in a safer setting. She acknowledged that it was one of the hardest decisions she’d ever faced.
“But first and foremost, Bruce knew that he wanted this for our daughters,” she added, mentioning their emphasis on creating a home that prioritizes the kids’ needs over his own.
Emma often visits Bruce, ensuring their daughters, Mabel and Evelyn, maintain a connection with him. “We’re out there a lot. It’s our second home,” she explained, adding that the space is filled with “love, warmth, attention, and laughter.”
