Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has made significant budget cuts, totaling $122 million, in the area of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) grants through the Department of Health and Human Services.
He partnered with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to facilitate these cuts.
According to a report from the Daily Mail:
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has implemented extensive budget cuts for research many perceived as overly progressive under the Trump administration.
Reports indicate that Kennedy slashed nearly $122 million from DEI-focused grants, specifically those related to LGBT issues, as noted by the New York Post.
The Trump administration viewed 195 refunded projects as overly focused on race and sexual orientation. Kennedy began this initiative in March.
It’s said he collaborated with DOGE to eliminate these funds from the DEI program.
One notable cut was a $5.5 million grant for the National Cancer Institute at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, intended to recruit at least 18 tenure-track faculty from underrepresented racial and ethnic backgrounds.
As reported by the New York Post:
Among the largest canceled grants is $5.5 million from the National Cancer Institute for Vanderbilt University’s “Vanderbilt First” initiative, which aims to recruit at least 18 tenure-track faculty from minoritized groups, as highlighted in the article.
Drexel University, while not as wealthy, received over $4.6 million from the National Cancer Institute aimed at fostering a diverse faculty in health disparity research to promote systemic change.
The funding summary outlines that these resources will help support diverse early-stage faculty focused on health disparities.
A similar cut was made to a study at the University of Virginia related to “neurodevelopmental biomarkers for late diagnosis in diverse autism among women and gender,” which was part of a broader contribution published by the university in 2022.
