Katie Thurston expressed concerns about possibly having contracted COVID-19 during her ongoing battle with breast cancer.
The former contestant from “The Bachelorette” shared her feelings via Instagram on Friday, saying that her stage 4 diagnosis has left her “very exhausted.” She noted, “Breast cancer, really, you should just Google everything and ask questions.”
In her post, she mentioned that this was typically her week off from medication, a time meant for recovery. However, she had chosen to get tested for COVID-19, feeling a bit anxious about it.
Thurston described the strange feelings surrounding her illness, pondering aloud about the interaction between COVID-19 and her condition, particularly regarding her low white blood cell counts.
“Breast cancer is just… odd,” she stated. “What happens if I get COVID while dealing with this? Maybe I’m just having a rough moment, I don’t know.”
On a lighter note, she said she ordered some ice cream while waiting for her COVID test results, commenting that “everything will be fine.” In a follow-up post, she even shared a picture of her ice cream and test, encouraging her followers by saying “wish me luck.”
Thurston later updated her followers, showing the negative result and writing, “There’s no COVID; I’m just tired from battling breast cancer and my own worries.”
She also shared a quote that likened the bodies of those with cancer to “haunted houses,” reflecting on the unpredictability of her situation.
“I’m always waiting for what might come next,” she said, “trying to find an exit when I know there aren’t any doors in this house. I’m just learning to dance with the ghosts in here.”
Thurston first publicly shared her diagnosis in February, stating her determination to fight it, while also revealing feelings of despair and anger.
She began treatment in March and disclosed that the cancer had progressed to stage 4, which had spread to her liver. This was shortly after marrying comedian Jeff Alkuri before starting her treatment.
In June, she discussed the side effects of her treatment, noting that she had lost both her hair and some memory.
Previously, in May, she mentioned experiencing medically induced menopause. Thurston gained popularity during the 25th season of “The Bachelor” and later became the lead in the 17th season of “The Bachelorette,” where she got engaged to Blake Moines, although they separated in 2021.
