Tracey Bregman Reflects on Early Backlash in Soap Opera Career
Tracey Bregman, a well-known figure in the world of soap operas, has recently opened up about her early experiences in her role as Lauren Fenmore on “The Young and the Restless.” It’s intriguing—though not everyone seems to appreciate the stories surrounding her character. Bregman shared that Lauren’s initial portrayal was met with intense backlash, even revealing that some viewers expressed their anger in extreme ways, mentioning, “people tried to escape me off the highway,” based on her character’s actions.
Lauren Fenmore made her debut in 1983, and since then, Bregman has continuously played the role. While the character eventually won over many fans, that wasn’t always the case. At first, Lauren was depicted as quite the bully, and Bregman specifically recalled the challenge of interacting with her co-star, Beth Maitland, whose character, Traci Abbott, was particularly tough for fans to accept.
Bregman discussed this on a podcast, emphasizing how difficult it was to deliver harsh lines to Maitland, who has been her close friend for over forty years. “It was extremely difficult because Beth has been one of my best friends for 42 years,” Bregman said. It’s interesting to think how personal connections can complicate performances.
She also reminisced about a specific moment, noting that she struggled with saying hurtful things. “I had to say the worst things to her, and Beth would tell you that I cried more than she did because I couldn’t get through it,” she recalled, which adds a layer of depth to their long-standing friendship.
While there were light-hearted moments during filming, Bregman mentioned that portraying a villainous character wasn’t all fun and games: “I’ll tell you, it was a double-edged sword playing a sneaky girl because I was left with death threats.” The reaction from podcast hosts and fellow soap stars was one of shock—Bregman noted, “There was a bad part that I hadn’t actually talked about,” shedding light on a darker side to fame.
Bregman has portrayed Lauren for over 2,000 episodes across both “The Young and the Restless” and “The Bold and The Beautiful.” Before taking on this iconic role, she began her career with another melodrama, playing Donna Temple Craig on “Days of Our Lives” in the late ’70s and early ’80s.
Interestingly, the dynamics of soap opera roles can be quite tricky. Just last month, Eva Larue spoke of her short tenure on “General Hospital,” revealing how, despite initial fan favor, she felt the pressure of playing a character that was hard for viewers to embrace. “It was actually tough for me – as a person,” she admitted, reflecting on the challenges of portraying a disliked character.
In the end, while Bregman’s character has evolved into one that fans now appreciate, the path wasn’t always smooth. It makes you wonder about the complexities of audience perception and actor relationships in the soap opera realm.
