Olivia Newton-John’s Hesitation Over “Physical”

Olivia Newton-John had some concerns about sharing her body image with the world. Known widely for her role as Sandy in “Grease,” she was a beloved figure, but she struggled with exposing a more provocative side. Thankfully, with some nudge from her close friend, she took the leap and performed the iconic song “Physical.”

John Mason, who was the singer’s representative for five decades, has penned a memoir titled “Crazy Lucky.” The book explores the measures taken to safeguard memorable moments that defined her career. Mason, who continues to manage Newton-John’s estate along with her daughter, Chloe Rattanji, has also collaborated with various prominent artists like Roy Orbison and Shakira.

Mason mentions in his book that upon initially reviewing the lyrics of “Physical,” Newton-John was taken aback, exclaiming, “I can’t do this. I can’t sing these lyrics…please!” Yet, Mason saw the song as a daring move, an opportunity for Newton-John to reinvent her public persona.

“When I think of Olivia Newton-John, I think of her ‘Goodie Two Shoes’ image,” he told Fox News Digital.

He recalled how, when she finally performed the sultry number, it was surprising to see her transform in that tight black outfit. However, in her mind, she was still that same girl who sang “I Honestly Love You.”

Interestingly, the song was originally offered to Tina Turner, who turned it down saying it was too risqué. She suggested it to Newton-John because, well, who would expect her to sing those words?

But when offered the song, Newton-John had her reservations. “John, I can’t sing this; it clashes with my image,” she expressed, revealing her concerns about how fans might react.

However, Mason had faith in the piece. “I think this will really work for you,” he assured her.

Newton-John finally donned her leotard and leg warmers, and the results were electric.

Mason noted that “Physical” became her most significant hit, not only at that time but throughout her whole career. It debuted on September 28, 1981, right as MTV exploded onto the scene. It turned out to be one of the defining hits of the 1980s.

Newton-John herself later mentioned how at first, she felt as though she had crossed a line, but ultimately, the strategic move reinvented her image. She described feeling particularly embarrassed when the song faced criticism for being provocative, but reflecting on it now, she sees its iconic status.

Newton-John famously quipped, “Now it’s almost tame compared to what’s on the radio today.” Eventually, “Physical” won a Grammy for Best Video, highlighting how the playful yet bold approach resonated with audiences.

Sadly, in 2022, Newton-John passed away after a long battle with breast cancer at the age of 73, leaving behind a legacy that many continue to celebrate.
