Tulane opened the 2025 college football season with a decisive 23-3 victory over Northwestern in New Orleans.
After the game, head coach John Sumrall certainly had some strong words, expressing dissatisfaction with the way Northwestern treated the city. “When you show rudeness to New Orleans, that’s what happens,” he remarked, emphasizing that his team came ready to play.
For the season opener, Tulane donned green jerseys and helmets to honor the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, reflecting on the legacy of the 2005 team.
However, their initial plan had been different. They aimed to wear the same white uniforms that the 2005 team wore, to further commemorate that significant moment.
But Northwestern put the brakes on that idea, refusing the request to wear white jerseys in advance of the game.
“I wanted them to wear the exact uniforms that were worn two decades ago,” Sumrall explained. He suggested that the rejection might have fueled the team’s motivation to represent New Orleans. “So, never underestimate the spirit of this city,” he added.
At the start of the season, Tulane showcased Jake Retzlaff, a quarterback transferred from BYU. He performed impressively, completing 18 of 18 passes with a touchdown for 152 yards, along with rushing for another touchdown and 113 yards on the ground.
Retzlaff’s transfer came amid serious allegations that were later dismissed, related to a claimed incident in 2023 in Provo.
Sumrall’s connection to Tulane runs deep; he has been part of the program since 2012, originally serving as the co-defensive coordinator. After a stint away, he resumed his role in 2024, leading the team to a 15-10 record.
This season, Tulane is aiming for a spot in the college football playoffs.
