The Challenge of Parenting
Being a respectful parent can often feel like a tightrope walk. It’s tough to balance discipline with the desire to nurture a strong bond with our children.
There’s this one commandment that resonates deeply with almost all parents, but it can feel more difficult than others.
Our love for our kids runs deep, and naturally, we crave a strong relationship with them. That’s wonderful, but it can cross a line. When our desire to connect outweighs our commitment to God, that’s when it might lead us astray.
As Ally Beth Stucky points out, “The goal is to keep a close relationship with your child while also following the Lord… that’s the hope for all Christian parents.”
But if you’re put in a situation where you have to choose between obeying God or molding your child to reflect your desires, the clear choice, according to the Christian faith, is to prioritize God’s will. It’s an aspect of self-denial.
Ally mentions the challenging verse in Luke 14:26 where Jesus states that a true disciple must love Him above all, including family. This doesn’t truly mean hating our loved ones but rather putting devotion to Jesus first.
“I do believe in trying to keep those relationships intact,” she emphasizes, “but always in a way that follows the Lord, who is more compassionate and wise than we are.”
She critiques Pastor Andy Stanley from Georgia and others in progressive churches for promoting acceptance of LGBTQ+ identities among children, arguing that this misguides young people away from God’s teachings about sexuality and marriage.
Ally underscores the inspiring story of Laura Perry, who transitioned away from transgenderism with the support of parents who didn’t compromise their beliefs. They consistently shared God’s message, alongside their kindness, which eventually led Laura back to repentance.
She also highlights Rosaria Butterfield, a former LGBTQ+ scholar who struggled to reconcile her identity with Christianity for two decades. Her transformation serves as a powerful reminder of the changes that can occur when Christ enters a person’s life.
“When Jesus touches someone’s heart, He will eradicate sin,” Ally stresses. “He reigns over your heart, soul, and sexuality.”
