Noem hints at possible federal crime enforcement in other cities: 'Everything is still an option'

On Sunday, Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem found herself unable to pursue further federal law enforcement actions in Chicago and other cities governed by Democrats, following President Trump’s recent crackdown on crime in Washington, D.C.

During an interview on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” her plans for Chicago were discussed, with Noem stating that her department intends to “add more resources” to operations in the city.

“We have ongoing operations with ICE in Chicago and in various other states. We’re committed to maintaining the law, but we’re also looking to increase resources for those businesses,” she explained.

This comes amidst rising tensions between Illinois officials and President Trump.

Just the day before, Trump issued a stern warning to Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker regarding Chicago’s crime situation, stating he should either take control or expect federal intervention.

“Last weekend, six people were killed, and 24 others were shot in Chicago, yet Pritzker, the weak and pathetic governor, says he doesn’t need help to combat crime,” Trump wrote on social media. “He’s out of his mind!!! He better figure it out quickly or we’re coming in! MAGA!”

On the same day, Chicago’s Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order outlining his city’s stance on any potential federal control following the Trump administration’s threats.

“Chicago is committed to defending democracy and safeguarding our communities. This executive order sends a strong message to the federal government: we do not require unconstitutional and illegal military occupation,” Johnson stated.

When pressed about the possibility of federal actions in other cities, Noem emphasized that all options remain under consideration.

“Many cities are grappling with crime and violence right now,” Noem noted during her Sunday interview. “We haven’t dismissed any possibilities. We’ve made sure to allocate our resources and tools accordingly.”

She also mentioned that cities should, if they wish to enhance safety, actively seek assistance from the federal government in managing crime, just as D.C. has done.

Trump and his administration have promoted their recent crime crackdown in the nation’s capital as a notable success.

“D.C. has become a crime-free zone in just 14 days. Residents and workers there are thrilled!!!”
