Violence in Chicago over Labor Day Weekend
In the wake of President Trump’s warning about potentially sending the National Guard to Chicago, police reported that at least five people were shot and killed, with 35 others injured over the Labor Day weekend.
ABC7 Chicago reported that two women were discovered shot in a South Shore apartment Friday night. A 25-year-old woman sustained gunshots to the abdomen and leg and later succumbed to her injuries at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
On Saturday morning, an SUV pulled up around 11 a.m., and a gunman opened fire on two men outside. A 29-year-old man was hit multiple times and later died at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Later that evening, a 43-year-old woman was fatally shot by five assailants at approximately 7:45 p.m.
Two more fatalities occurred Sunday morning. A 33-year-old man was shot in the head just before 3 a.m., and about an hour later, a 46-year-old man was killed in a triple shooting.
Chicago police did not provide a response to Fox News Digital’s inquiries.
Political Tensions Following Trump’s Comments
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker reacted strongly against Trump’s comments, labeling his approach “unconstitutional” and expressing concerns over what he called “dangerous forces.” The Democratic leaders in Chicago assert they can handle the violence without federal intervention.
Trump escalated his conflict with Pritzker, asserting in a social media post that the governor is “incompetent” and issued a stern warning saying, “straight, fast, or we’re coming.” Meanwhile, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson denounced Trump’s threats and signed an executive order against deploying federal or National Guard forces.
Johnson proclaimed, “We don’t need unconstitutional and illegal military occupation of our cities,” vowing to do everything possible to protect democracy and their communities.
Trump’s recent threats follow similar enforcement actions in Washington, D.C., where he had mobilized Metropolitan Police as federal forces and activated the National Guard.
