A shopper at New York’s largest mall triggered panic when a man with an umbrella was mistaken for an active shooter. The incident unfolded around 3:20 PM, leading to a sudden influx of 911 calls. Witnesses thought the umbrella resembled an AR-15 rifle while walking through the Destiny USA Shopping and Entertainment Complex.
One caller reported seeing the man throw what appeared to be a weapon over his shoulder and cock it, which understandably escalated the situation.
Within minutes, law enforcement arrived on the scene, deploying drones and helicopters to assist. By 4:04 PM, security footage showed the man on an escalator, and officers pursued him into the food court area.
Amid the chaos, a dispatcher relayed reports of potential gunfire, but officials quickly confirmed that there were no actual shots fired. As a result, the mall was locked down with many shoppers rushing for the exits.
The man was detained shortly after at 4:10 PM, where it was revealed that the supposed firearm was just a black umbrella featuring a samurai-style handle. He was released without charges after cooperating with police.
The mall reopened after about 45 minutes, a situation that underscored the heightened anxiety many Americans feel in the wake of recent mass shootings.
This incident came just a day after a tragic shooting at a Catholic church in Minneapolis, where a gunman claimed the lives of two children and injured 15 others before taking his own life. The shooter, identified as 23-year-old Robin Westman, had legally acquired several firearms and left behind a manifesto filled with hate targeting children.
Authorities are treating this tragic event as a potential domestic terrorist act and anti-Catholic hate crime. In response, community leaders are stepping up mental health resources and enhancing safety measures within schools and places of worship.
Moreover, just a day prior, another shooting in Minneapolis left one man dead and six others injured outside a high school. The ongoing violence has left cities like New York shaken, especially after a recent attack in Midtown Manhattan that resulted in five deaths, including that of NYPD officials, before the shooter turned the gun on himself.
