Robin Wright Reflects on Parenting Mistakes

Robin Wright has opened up about her parenting experiences with her two children, whom she shares with her ex-husband, Sean Penn.

The 59-year-old actress mentioned that raising her daughter, Dylan, 34, and son, Hopper, 32, wasn’t particularly challenging. However, she expressed significant regret regarding her parenting choices over the years. “As a mother, I carry a lot of regret and have felt the repercussions of that with my children,” she shared in an interview with The Times of London, released on Saturday.

Wright has remarked on the difficulties of navigating parenting, particularly with Penn, who tends to be a stricter figure. She indicated that his absence due to his acting career had a significant impact. “He was there but also not really there,” she noted, adding that he later transitioned to a career as a police officer, leaving her to handle the aftermath.

Hopper has been candid about his struggles with Crystal Meth addiction since 2017. Wright recalled the anxiety she felt during that time, with friends constantly checking in, asking, “Is he alive? Is she alive?” It’s clear she’s faced challenges over the years concerning both of her children.

Wright observed that both she and Penn had extreme parenting styles, stating they didn’t provide that necessary middle ground. “We were both extremes; they didn’t get that grey area in the middle,” she said. Despite this, she feels optimistic about her children today, saying they are “in a really good place.”

Wright and Penn were married for 14 years, from 1996 to 2010, and both have since remarried and divorced multiple times. Following her relationship with Penn, she had a long-term connection with actor Ben Foster, which ended in 2020. Currently, she is dating an architect named Henry Smith, whom she met in England.

Reflecting on her life post-divorce, Wright mentioned that she and Penn maintain a friendship. In a previous conversation with E! News, she described the challenges of navigating a divorce while dealing with significant life events, labeling it “one of the most difficult things in life.”

“We’ll always be a family, whether together or apart. I think that’s beautiful,” she concluded.
