8.8 Magnitude Earthquake Triggers Tsunami in Japan
An 8.8 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Russia early Wednesday, resulting in a tsunami that impacted coastal regions of Russia’s Kuril Islands and Hokkaido Island in northern Japan.
Meanwhile, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake shook eastern Afghanistan near the border with Pakistan late Sunday, leading to at least 250 fatalities and injuring hundreds more.
The earthquake was registered at 11:47 PM, approximately 17 miles east-northeast of Jalalabad city in Nangarhar Province, according to the US Geological Survey. The full extent of the destruction is still unclear, given the remoteness of the region.
The Kunar Disaster Management Bureau indicated that at least 250 lives were lost and around 500 individuals injured, with those figures likely to climb as rescue efforts progress.
First Eruptions in Centuries Following Major Earthquake in Russia
Shallow earthquakes, like this one occurring just 5 miles deep, usually result in severe damage. Additionally, another smaller quake of 4.5 magnitude was detected shortly after midnight in the same area.
Afghanistan’s geographic location makes it particularly susceptible to seismic activity, especially within the Hindu Kush Mountains where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates converge.
The recent earthquakes are some of the deadliest in recent times, showcasing the ongoing challenges faced by countries in seismically active regions. The Taliban government estimates a staggering 4,000 deaths resulting from the 6.3 magnitude earthquake that struck on October 7, 2023, while UN reports suggest around 1,500 lives were lost.
