Trump Commends DC Mayor for Crime-Fighting Efforts
President Donald Trump recently expressed his appreciation for Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser’s collaboration with his administration in deploying National Guard forces to tackle crime in the city. He shared his thoughts on Truth Social, praising Bowser’s efforts, stating that her popularity surged partly due to this collaboration.
In his post, Trump distinguished Bowser’s positive approach from that of other politicians, including state governors like Illinois’ J.B. Pritzker and California’s Gavin Newsom, suggesting they focus too much on justifying violent crimes instead of working towards solutions. He emphasized that Bowser, unlike them, has taken constructive steps to address crime.
Bowser Acknowledges Improvements
Trump claimed that Bowser’s approval rating had increased, attributing it to the city’s progress in reducing crime. He mentioned that crime rates have dropped significantly, exemplifying that tough work and smart strategies are essential in combating such issues. He even highlighted feedback from law enforcement in Los Angeles, who felt his administration’s support was critical during riots, insisting that without it, major events like the Olympics could have been at risk.
Last week, Bowser noted that crime statistics in the city were showing a decline, citing increases in arrests and a fall in violent crime rates like carjacking and gun violence.
Crime Rate Decline and Future Plans
Reports showed that since the federal initiative began, carjackings have dropped by 87%, violent crime by 45%, and arrests have risen by 20%, with illegal gun recoveries also up by 12%. Bowser emphasized these trends at a press conference, reinforcing the message that improving crime conditions leads to safer neighborhoods.
On Monday, Attorney General Pam Bondy mentioned that there had been over 1,500 arrests and numerous illegal firearms seized since the ramped-up efforts began. Trump has hinted at potentially sending security forces to other cities governed by Democrats, signaling he hopes to replicate the strategies that seem to be working in DC.
