Family of influencer discovered encased in plastic following cartel-like killing

A tragic incident has unfolded in Mexico, where the bodies of a prominent influencer, her husband, and their two children were discovered wrapped in plastic in an abandoned pickup truck—a clear indication of a cartel execution.

Esmeralda Ferrer Garibay, a 32-year-old TikToker and singer, along with her 36-year-old husband Roberto Carlos Gill Lycea, their 13-year-old son Gael Santiago, and Regina, their seven-year-old daughter, were found dead in a gray Ford Ranger in Guadalajara on August 22, according to prosecutor Alfonso Gutierrez Santillan.

Investigation using surveillance footage led authorities back to an auto repair shop nearby. There, they found evidence such as blood stains, bullet casings, and indications of a ballistic trajectory.

“While forensic results are still pending, the ballistic and blood evidence strongly suggests they were killed at that location,” prosecutor Santillan stated.

Authorities did detain two men from the auto shop, but they were later released due to insufficient evidence. Just minutes after leaving the prosecutor’s office, the pair reportedly encountered an armed man.

Media sources indicated that the duo was approached by two acquaintances outside the office and that a third of their group managed to flee.

According to prosecutor Blanca Trujillo, the attackers had been waiting for over two hours before executing their plan.

As of now, the motive behind the attack remains unclear, and it is uncertain if this was a retaliatory act linked to the family’s murder.

Authorities are in the process of interviewing survivors to gather more details.

The family was officially identified on August 28, with reports suggesting that the husband may have been the intended target.

Esmeralda often showcased her lavish lifestyle on social media, flaunting luxury brands like Dior and Gucci, and boasting over 44,000 TikTok followers. She even shared videos of herself lip-syncing to Narco-Corridos, a genre that glorifies cartel life, while hinting at her husband’s alleged gang connections.

One particularly viral video, titled “The Benefits of Having a Narco Boyfriend,” received nearly 140,000 views, where she posed with a Gucci handbag.

Despite these associations, there’s no concrete evidence linking Esmeralda or her husband directly to any drug cartel. Rumors suggest, however, that her husband’s involvement in vehicle sales and tomato farms in Michoacan might have attracted organized crime interest.

The family had recently relocated from Michoacan, known for its high crime rates, to Guadalajara for better employment opportunities.
