Kirk Herbstreit Sparks Controversy During Game Commentary
Kirk Herbstreit didn’t hold back during the fourth quarter of TCU’s decisive 48-14 victory, expressing his displeasure with the performance of North Carolina. He was captured on a hot mic saying, “You’re bad,” which raised eyebrows among fans and analysts alike.
His remarks were highlighted on the popular podcast “Pardon My Take,” where a clip of his comment was shared. This came during what many considered to be a lackluster showing for the North Carolina team, with Herbstreit specifically referencing their 41-14 situation as they headed into the final quarter.
At 12:01 AM (ET), Herbstreit tweeted about the incident, sharing a post that reiterated his sentiments about the team’s performance. He mentioned discussing his comments with his spotter, reinforcing that the game was not living up to expectations.
Following the narrative, he reflected on the challenges of calling games where one team’s performance is markedly poor. He noted that, instead of sugarcoating it, he wanted to express appreciation for his colleagues, emphasizing how tough it is to present during such blowouts.
He also shared a tweet from ESPN spotter Tony Granieri, who confirmed that he heard Herbstreit’s comments directly from the booth. The environment was tense, with many considering North Carolina’s loss one of the more significant defeats in a coach’s debut.
Initially, the Tar Heels had a promising start, scoring a touchdown on their first drive to take a 7-0 lead. However, the game quickly derailed, with particularly poor quarterback play causing major issues. Gio Lopez struggled, completing just four of ten passes for 69 yards and throwing a troubling pick six in the first half, leading to a shift in the lineup.
Belichick, reflecting on the game, acknowledged the need for improvement across all areas. He stated, “We have a lot to work on, including coaching and playing. Tonight’s performance wasn’t up to our standard.” He credited the opposing team for outplaying them throughout the match.
Looking ahead, the Tar Heels are preparing to face Charlotte in their next matchup.
