2025 U.S. Open contenders and non-contenders for men's and women's brackets

Top 8 Rankings and Updates

Welcome back to our Open Top 8 rankings—patents pending. We previously took a break during the first part, ranking the top four contenders in the quarterfinals. Now, as we move into the second half, let’s discuss industry standards, breakout candidates, and career comebacks in this concluding view of the top 8!

Women’s Draw (Lower Half)

Each year, there are four Grand Slams, and sometimes it’s easy to overlook individual matches and their lessons. However, Iga Swiatek’s recent performance at Wimbledon was certainly eye-catching. She defeated Amanda Anisimova with a crushing score of 6-0, 6-0, showcasing that the former world number one is indeed back in form. While she might not regain the top ranking from Sabalenka this year due to how points are awarded, winning her second US Open and seventh Grand Slam by age 24 could mean she enters the conversation of all-time greats. It’s an exciting prospect for her, and she seems driven to add another title to her already impressive resume.

Tier 2: Contenders Who Could Win

Naomi Osaka is back on the court and looking focused. She exhibits a vintage playing style, wielding her serve like a weapon against her opponents. Her recent match against Coco Gauff showed her ability to maintain composure and consistency. This new enjoyment in playing tennis is refreshing, especially after her overwhelming win at the US Open. Sometimes, it’s just nice to reconnect with what you love.

Thinking about Amanda Anisimova, she was once on a heroic path last year, reaching the finals and generating buzz as a rising star in women’s tennis. But then Swiatek came in and delivered a tough lesson. It’s interesting because Anisimova now finds herself facing Swiatek again in the quarterfinals. However, there’s a sense that she’s learned from past mistakes and, hopefully, she’s ready to channel some good luck and overcome her previous hurdles.

Speaking of Czech talent, there seems to be a resurgence in Czech tennis. Players like Muchova are showing everyone that they are still strong forces in the sport. With a few players making it to the top eight at the US, Muchova aims to join their ranks. Despite battling injuries, she appears to be regaining her form. Though she’s had some lengthy matches, she definitely has the opportunity to prove herself once again.

Tier 3: Dark Horses

There’s a noticeable parity in women’s tennis, resulting in intriguing competitions among players.

Men’s Lottery (Bottom Half)

It’s hard to put into words how impressive Jannik Sinner’s performance at the 2025 US Open has been. He dismantled Alexander Babrik in just 21 games, showcasing his prowess on the court. It’s intriguing to see how he can maintain his momentum and adapt his game as he advances. Winning this tournament would certainly be a feat worth mentioning.

Tier 2: Possible Contenders

I have always believed in Lorenzo Musetti’s potential. If he can ramp up his play to match the likes of Alcaraz and Sinner, he may just make it. But transitioning into that elite category isn’t easy; it’s all or nothing for him. Whether or not he can break through remains to be seen, but I wouldn’t count him out.

Tier 3: Longshots

Then there’s the ongoing question around players trying to reach major quarterfinals without securing a win. Andrei Lubreviff holds a unique but unfortunate record at 0-10, while De Minaur sits at 0-6, which feels quite strange for someone consistently ranking in the top ten. Eventually, both need to find a way to turn their fortunes around, but facing opponents like Sinner and Alcaraz won’t make things easy.

I’ve also been skeptical about Felix possibly being a real Grand Slam contender for some time. However, he has recently managed to upset high-ranked players like Alexander Zverev and Andrei Rublev. At just 25, he’s been on tour for eight years and has reached the quarter-finals three times. Now he faces the daunting task of besting three top-ten players to claim victory. Given his track record, I’m not sure this will happen, but it would certainly be a remarkable achievement.
