Illinois Officials React to Trump’s Comments on Chicago Violence
Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton recently criticized President Trump’s remarks regarding anti-crime measures and possible immigration enforcement in Chicago, drawing parallels to actions taken in Washington, D.C. over the past weeks.
“This isn’t really about public safety,” Stratton stated during an appearance on CNN’s “News Central.” “What the president seems to want is to create a crisis that he can then claim to resolve.”
She elaborated, “He appears to thrive on escalating tensions, aiming to craft a narrative where he is the hero swooping in to save the day.”
The White House responded sharply to her comments, labeling them as “despicable” interpretations of Trump’s intentions. Spokesperson Taylor Rogers remarked that it’s unfortunate local leaders in Illinois are not collaborating with the president to enhance community safety.
“For 13 years, Chicago has been plagued as the nation’s ‘murder capital.’ This ongoing crime wave jeopardizes the safety of law-abiding citizens,” Rogers expressed in a statement. “It’s clear that Democrats are lacking popularity because they ignore the sensible solutions that the public supports.”
Stratton expressed concern over a lack of cooperative efforts between their administration and local law enforcement. “We really haven’t had any direct communication or coordination. So, I’m left wondering how this approach actually will enhance public safety,” she remarked during her discussion with CNN’s Kate Bolduan.
“It’s puzzling why we aren’t collaborating with local police when we’re connecting with communities throughout the state,” she added. “This isn’t about real public safety adjustments.”
Trump had recently declared a state of public safety emergency, sending troops to Washington, D.C., and hinted at potential plans for extra law enforcement in Chicago, a city grappling with significant gun violence issues.
Stratton and other local leaders have acknowledged concerns over an uptick in Immigration and Customs Enforcement presence in Chicago, amid an ongoing clash with Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker about the federal government’s possible intervention.
Data from law enforcement revealed that over Labor Day weekend alone, seven individuals were killed, with 54 others injured in numerous shootings throughout Chicago.
Trump, in recent posts, highlighted the violence, citing that over the weekend, at least 54 individuals were shot, which included eight fatalities. He mentioned, “Chicago has a remarkable reputation for danger. The governor desperately needs assistance, though I doubt he realizes it.”
He also declared, “Chicago is the world’s murder capital!” in a follow-up post.
In an additional note, Stratton had announced intentions to run for an open U.S. Senate seat in the upcoming elections next fall.
