Trump dismisses health rumors: "It's a bit absurd"

President Trump reemerged in public on Tuesday, sparking a flurry of online speculation regarding his health, with some even suggesting he might be deceased, a claim that has no basis in fact.

During his Oval Office appearance, where he discussed relocating Space Command to Alabama, Trump addressed these rumors directly. Responding to a question from Fox News’ Peter Doocy, he dismissed the claims as “fake news.”

“I’ve heard some wild stories. It’s quite absurd. Last week, I had numerous meetings with newspapers—everything went smoothly. I didn’t do much for a couple of days, and suddenly people thought something was wrong with me,” he remarked.

He continued, “No, I’ve been quite active on weekends. They knew I went to visit a club I own near the Potomac River. I was busy.” Despite this, the speculation surged online, especially after images of his injured hands circulated earlier in the summer. The White House previously explained that Trump has chronic venous deficiency, which leads to swelling in the legs and visible bruising on his hands.

Notably, the media had previously faced criticism during Biden’s presidency for seemingly overlooking concerns about Trump’s health, and the tables appear to have turned with some voices demanding clarity on Trump’s current well-being.

Biden, known as the oldest serving president, is younger than Trump was when he assumed office, effectively setting the record during his four-year term.

A reporter observed the president on a recent golf outing. On Friday, Trump also conducted an interview with a media outlet. His circle typically discounts speculation about his health, with one insider humorously stating, “As Shakespeare said, I’ll do nothing.”

A former aide described the White House’s response to health rumors as “more annoying than an alarm.” They noted that this reality often comes with the territory of having the oldest individual to take office, with staff needing to creatively manage such narratives.

Amid widespread scrutiny regarding transparency about the former president’s mental state, Biden’s team has recently criticized Trump’s White House for a lack of clarity during his time away from public life.

“In August, he had a stretch of 26 days without public appearances followed by a few days back on the press cycle, leading to confusion,” one commentator explained.

Trump has remained active on social media, even referencing his feelings about life on Sunday. He addressed comments from Logan O’Handley, who suggested a “double standard” exists regarding media perception of Biden versus Trump. O’Handley remarked that despite public appearances, Biden has been labeled as “sharp,” while Trump’s absence garners unwarranted concern.

Vance, the Vice President, recently remarked in an interview that Trump is “incredibly healthy” but can step back when necessary. However, some former aides noted that Vance’s comments could be misinterpreted, suggesting he wants to avoid any appearance of campaigning.

When Trump’s announcement was scheduled for 2 PM on Tuesday, some social media users speculated it might be linked to his resignation. A parody account even claimed roads around Walter Reed Hospital in Maryland were closed in anticipation of Trump’s arrival.

Criticism of Biden largely centers on concerns about his cognitive state, while Trump’s physical condition faces scrutiny as well. One social media user noted, “Donald Trump’s ankles are so swollen he looks like he’s wearing invisible weights,” alongside photos of both presidents, implying a stark contrast in their current health statuses.
