Injuries Shake Up San Francisco Game

San Francisco—The atmosphere is buzzing with anticipation.

On Tuesday, Sabrina Ionescu was not on the court for the game against the Valkyries, but teammate Nyara Sabally was present and dressed to play. Though not featured in the team’s 66-58 loss, it’s progress for Sabally, who has been out since prior to the All-Star break.

Coach Sandy Brondello mentioned that Ionescu is “days” away from returning. She had individual training on Monday, yet the local star wasn’t cleared for play.

Brondello expressed hope for Ionescu’s availability for the upcoming game in Seattle on Friday. Ionescu has missed three of the last four games due to injuries affecting her left foot. Her first injury came two weeks ago when Camila Cardoso fell on her foot. More recently, she hurt her big toe during practice last Wednesday.

Despite training alone for several days, there was uncertainty about her readiness for Tuesday’s matchup.

Sabally, meanwhile, has been sidelined since July 16 due to complications from a surgically repaired right knee.

Brondello noted it was unfortunate that Ionescu couldn’t showcase her skills in front of friends and family, especially considering how much this game means to her.

Reflecting on Ionescu’s journey, Brondello said, “Sabrina has achieved so much across the country; it all started here. She’s an inspiration, watching her grow from a little girl.”

Originally, Ionescu had a stiff neck in her first game at the Chase Center. This time around, she couldn’t even step onto the floor.

Blondello showed visible frustration during the match against the Valkyries when a non-call led to a fall for Breanna Stewart. This incident seemed to push him to his limits, resulting in a technical foul after he expressed his grievances to the officials.

Passionate about keeping his players safe, Natasha Cloud stood by Brondello, emphasizing the importance of protecting the team.
