Kevin Costner Remembers Graham Greene
Kevin Costner has shared heartfelt memories of his late friend and co-star, Graham Greene, who passed away on Monday at the age of 73.
In an emotional Instagram post, Costner, 70, reflected on their time together during the filming of “Dances with Wolves,” a film that has left a lasting impact on both their careers.
“When I think about my time with Graham Greene on ‘Dances with Wolves,’ a few things come to mind,” he wrote in the caption, recalling poignant moments from the classic 1990 western.
Costner described Greene as someone who was keen to learn Lakota, the language of the Native American community featured in the film. He also expressed his delight at Greene’s recognition, especially as his performance was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
“He had a unique way of conveying the relationship between Dunbar and the Native Americans with just a few words,” Costner noted, underscoring Greene’s ability as an actor.
Referring to Greene as “a work master and a wonderful person,” Costner added, “We are thankful to have witnessed this part of his enduring legacy. Rest in peace, Graham.”
Costner’s directorial debut, “Dances with Wolves,” tells the story of his character, who forms bonds with Lakota tribes, including Greene’s portrayal of Kicking Bird. The film received 12 Oscar nominations and won several, including Best Picture and Best Director.
Greene died in a Toronto hospital, confirmed by his representative. It was stated that he succumbed to a “long illness,” although specifics about his condition were not disclosed.
Greene’s on-screen career began in 1979, with key roles in the Canadian drama series “The Great Detective” and the film “Running Brave.” He gained widespread acclaim for his performance in “Dances with Wolves.”
His extensive filmography also includes notable films like “Thunderheart,” “Maverick,” “Transamerica,” and “Wind River.” On television, he appeared in series such as “Goliath,” “Reservation Dogs,” “1883,” “The Last of Us,” and “Echo.”
In a 2017 conversation, Greene referred to his journey in acting as one of “stumbling,” reflecting on his varied career that included work as a carpenter, welder, and other trades before finding his way into film.
“I started doing many different things, and then found myself acting. It’s been quite a journey,” he shared at the time.
