Former New York City mayor, Bill de Blasio, has expressed his support for Democratic socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani in the upcoming mayoral race.
De Blasio shared his endorsement in a piece for the New York Daily News, emphasizing the city’s potential for “affordable options for working-class individuals” and a commitment to challenging existing norms.
“It’s not just about having the right ideas—Zohran Mamdani can resonate with the city’s needs and address the struggles faced by the very people contributing to this community,” de Blasio stated.
The former mayor pointed out Mamdani’s significant recent victory, marking a shift in local politics.
De Blasio noted some parallels between his own agenda and Mamdani’s. Mamdani aims to implement measures like a rent freeze affecting over two million tenants and provide taxpayer-funded childcare for children aged six weeks to five years. De Blasio highlighted his own past promises of affordable housing and early childhood education, though he admits they sometimes came across as overly idealistic.
“I masked genuine issues with rhetoric that labeled my goals as unrealistic. The public’s desire for change aligns with what Mamdani proposes,” de Blasio remarked.
According to de Blasio, New York needs a proactive leader to confront challenges from the conservative federal administration.
He has reiterated his support during appearances on MSNBC, particularly emphasizing the need to counter opposition from both Republicans and Democrats hesitant about Mamdani’s vision.
“As Democrats focus on everyday issues, any Republican attempts to confuse the narrative are simply tactics to deflect,” he added.
Mamdani is also gaining support from prominent Democratic figures like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Attorney General Leticia James, Senator Elizabeth Warren, and independent Senator Bernie Sanders.
