Imane Khelif contests boxing suspension with absurd demand for gender testing

Iman Khelif Appeals Ban on Female Boxing Competitions

Iman Khelif, an Olympic boxer, has lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport regarding the prohibition against women’s boxing. Khelif, who has experienced significant scrutiny, won a gold medal in the women’s 66kg division at the recent Paris Olympics. While complaints have emerged asserting that Khelif is a man, rumors intensified following a dominating performance where he didn’t lose a single round.

Three separate reports suggested Khelif is male, with a fourth report producing medical documents alleging that he possesses an XY chromosome. This has led to various reactions and, honestly, some confusion surrounding his situation.

“She’s not in the ring anymore. After what happened at the Olympics,” a coach reflected.

His former coach mentioned that Khelif left the sport entirely, stopping training for months after the medical report became public.

Now, the sports arbitration body is insisting that Khelif must compete again.

Khelif’s appeal claims that World Boxing has unjustly barred him from participating in upcoming events without first undergoing genetic testing. As stated by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), he expressed that “I cannot participate… until they determine genetic sex.”

There were plans for Khelif to defend his title at the Aind Hoven Box Cup, an event organized by World Boxing in the Netherlands, but he opted out after WBO announced mandatory sex testing.

While attempting to reverse this decision, Khelif submitted an urgent request stating that CAS should not impose genetic testing and affirmed his eligibility for the 2025 World Boxing Championships.

Khelif seemed hopeful that his appeal would yield an injunction, allowing him to compete before a formal resolution, yet CAS denied that request.

“The CAS has rejected the plea to suspend World Boxing’s ruling until the case is resolved,” they noted.

The proceedings will now involve a back-and-forth exchange of written statements followed by a formal hearing scheduled with CAS.

As previously mentioned, Khelif had reportedly stepped back from the sport after his former manager commented that “she’s ceased all training.” It’s a complicated situation, and I can’t help but wonder how it will unfold.

Some reports indicate Khelif’s condition is 5-alpha-reductase deficiency, leading to confusion over gender identity, given he has XY chromosomes and internal testes.

This condition causes some individuals assigned female at birth to develop male characteristics later in life. This disruption in expectations is certainly adding to the ongoing debates about gender, sports, and fairness.

It’s a nuanced situation—both fascinating and quite troubling, really. How society reacts to these cases will be something to watch in the coming days and years.
