GOP Senators Challenge Schools That Change Kids' Gender Without Parents' Knowledge

New Legislation Aimed at Parental Involvement in Schools

Indiana Senator Jim Banks and Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton have brought back a bill aimed at ensuring that K-12 schools keep parents informed if their child feels discomfort regarding their biological sex. This legislation, referred to as the “Parents Empower Act,” seeks to prevent schools from hiding information related to a child’s gender identity or transitions.

In a statement to the DCNF, Banks emphasized the importance of parental awareness, stating, “Parents should not be kept in the dark about their children. This bill will prevent schools from pushing fundamental gender ideology behind their parents’ backs and ensure that families are in charge of where they belong.”

This piece of legislation was initially introduced in the House in May 2023 but did not reach a vote.

Cotton also voiced his concerns, arguing that schools should never impose radical ideologies without parental consent. “Our bill protects students and ensures that parents control their children’s education. Schools should remain educational institutions, not places of radical liberal propaganda,” he remarked.

Additionally, Representative Mary Miller from Illinois has introduced a similar version of the bill in the House, emphasizing that “parents have God-given rights and obligations to raise their children without being fooled by extremists in public education.” She further declared the need to combat what she sees as radical gender ideologies impacting children.

On another front, former President Donald Trump has been active in addressing gender ideology across federal agencies and schools. He issued a directive aimed at halting “radical indoctrination” in K-12 schools, arguing that federal funds shouldn’t support practices that promote gender ideology.

This directive warned against potentially harmful policies, such as facilitating medical procedures for minors without the necessary parental involvement. It raised concerns regarding violations of existing civil rights laws related to education and parental rights.

Recent statistics reveal a notable trend: from 2019 to 2023, nearly 14,000 minors received sex-related treatments, with over 5,000 undergoing surgical interventions. Furthermore, research from the Williams Institute at UCLA uncovered that about 724,000 children aged 13-17 and roughly 2.1 million adults in the U.S. identify as transgender.
