Massachusetts boldly confronts federal authorities over COVID vaccine.

Massachusetts Addresses Vaccine Availability Amid Federal Changes

Governor Healey emphasized on Wednesday that no matter what unfolds with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and the federal government, ensuring vaccines remain accessible in Massachusetts is a priority. “We are working to make sure all pharmacies provide the vaccine as quickly as possible,” she stated.

Additionally, Healey highlighted the state’s initiative to foster a public health collaboration among Northeast states, which includes all New England regions except New Hampshire. This approach aims to utilize medical societies rather than the CDC for guidance in vaccination policies. Interestingly, on the same day, California, Washington, and Oregon announced a similar “health alliance” focused on immunization strategies for their areas.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has a controversial history regarding vaccines, often promoting skepticism and misinformation. Since his appointment, he has disrupted CDC operations and advocated for policies that contradict established scientific findings.

Some of his controversial actions include:

  • Terminating all 17 members of the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices, an independent board that provides advice to the CDC on vaccine policy, and replacing them with individuals who many believe lack necessary qualifications and share his anti-vaccine views.
  • Removing children and pregnant women from the CDC’s COVID immunization schedule, despite an independent review indicating that unvaccinated children are at significant risk from the virus.
  • Eliminating $500 million in federal funding intended for research on new mRNA vaccines and treatments, despite the lifesaving role these vaccines played during the pandemic.
  • Suggesting the removal of thimerosal, a preservative used in some vaccines, although the CDC itself states it’s not harmful.

Recently, he dismissed the CDC’s director for not complying with demands to dismiss high-ranking officials or approve policies from his chosen advisory committee. Following this, three senior CDC officials resigned in protest, arguing that Kennedy has jeopardized the agency’s credibility and might broaden restrictions on immunizations. Moreover, over 1,000 current and former CDC staff members have called for Kennedy’s resignation regarding his vaccination policies.

This year, the U.S. faced its worst measles outbreak in three decades, largely fueled by unvaccinated populations.

Wendy Parmet, a public health law professor at Northeastern University, praised the proactive order from the state, stating that Massachusetts, despite its public health reputation, had made it challenging for residents to access the latest FDA-approved booster. She discovered that primary care physicians have largely delegated COVID vaccine administration to pharmacies as they are overwhelmed with other patients. However, Massachusetts law previously restricted pharmacists from giving COVID shots without CDC panel authorization.

Parmet noted, “If you can’t get it at a pharmacy and you can’t get it at a doctor’s office, you can’t get it.” She qualifies for the booster as someone over 65.

Fortunately, the state’s recent directive allows pharmacists to administer booster shots without needing approval from the CDC. Healey’s administration has also expanded eligibility for the vaccine.

“They’re working to enhance access beyond the FDA’s original expectations,” she remarked. “This seems like a positive step that should restore our public health leadership.”

The governor’s directive permits pharmacists to administer two Moderna booster vaccines: mNEXSPIKE for individuals aged 12 and older, and Spikevax for those 5 and up. It also includes Pfizer’s Comirnaty for those five and older and Novavax’s Nuvaxoid for ages 12 and above.

Typically, children younger than five receive vaccines at their pediatricians’ offices.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
