Aziz Ansari Discusses Bill Murray’s Reaction to Misconduct Allegations
Aziz Ansari recently spoke about the misconduct allegations against Bill Murray that resulted in the halt of production on the film “Being Mortal.” In an interview with Hollywood Reporter, the 42-year-old actor shared insights into how the 74-year-old Murray reacted to the situation.
“He was devastated,” Ansari recalled. “He couldn’t believe it happened. I think this film meant a lot to him.”
Production was suspended in April 2022 after a young female crew member filed a complaint about what she termed “inappropriate behavior” from Murray. It was later reported that Murray settled with the woman for just over $100,000 in October 2022.
Sources indicated that the incident involved Murray allegedly kissing the woman through their masks, which were required due to COVID-19 precautions. Another crew member reportedly witnessed the event and supported the complaint.
Following an investigation by Disney, the parent company of Searchlight Pictures, the studio decided to shelve the film altogether. “Being Mortal,” which marked Ansari’s directorial debut, had plans to also feature actors like Seth Rogen and Keke Palmer.
In a later conversation with The New York Times, Murray expressed that he still thinks about the incident often. “I don’t go for days or weeks without thinking about what happened,” he admitted.
Murray described feeling conflicted, noting, “I’m trying to create peace, but it was like a barbecue in my heart.” He shared that he had developed a rapport with the woman involved, as they often shared meals together during the filming. Reflecting on the incident, he remarked, “I don’t know what prompted me to do that,” acknowledging it was an action he thought was humorous in the past, but clearly wasn’t appropriate in this context.
Although Ansari faced his own challenges in light of past sexual misconduct allegations in 2018, he hopes to move on from the situation with Murray. He mentioned receiving messages and texts from friends expressing their sympathy when the allegations emerged, but he remained resolute not to dwell on negative experiences.
After production was put on hold, Ansari was working on a new comedy titled “Good Luck.” He reached out to Rogen for participation, sharing, “I said, ‘Hey, I know I’m supposed to film you being a human, so you’re free today. This is a day for me—for me. If you want to help me, read this and tell me if you want to do it.’
In “Good Luck,” Ansari plays an absent-minded gig worker who interacts with Gabriel, a guardian angel portrayed by Keanu Reeves, in a Denny’s parking lot. The story explores themes of wealth and happiness and is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on October 17th.
