Malcolm Gladwell Reflects on Sports Conference Performance
Malcolm Gladwell recently shared that he felt “embarrassed” about his role as host at a significant sports conference focused on the advancement of transathletes in women’s sports.
In a podcast that aired on Tuesday, the 62-year-old author discussed his experience at the 2022 MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference. He admitted that he was “objective in an unfair way.”
“I really share your viewpoint, and I didn’t handle it well, so yes, I’m embarrassed about how I performed on that panel,” he stated. The panel featured Host Ross Tucker, who voiced opposition to certain interventions during the discussion.
Tucker noted that while he often left statements hanging, Dr. Katie Burns, a panelist supporting trans rights and an ESPN writer, received enthusiastic applause for her points.
Gladwell speculated that about “90% of the audience” was likely on Burns’s side, though only a fraction would openly admit it. He didn’t fully acknowledge the sentiment at the conference, reflecting on a moment when trans athletes turned to Tucker and asked, “You have to win us over.” This realization struck Gladwell, making him aware of the extreme nature of the argument being expressed.
He contrasted the current climate with past views, recalling how he previously worried about whether elite swimmer Lia Thomas might qualify for the Olympics. Gladwell described her participation as a “challenging case,” suggesting that discussions around it were often limited to specific media outlets.
In a follow-up podcast, both he and Tucker reflected that if the panel were convened today, their perspectives would likely differ greatly.
“The landscape has really shifted,” Gladwell remarked simply. “Even supporters are having to rethink their positions.”
