Randy Moss Shares His Journey Battling Cancer
Randy Moss and his wife, Lydia, opened up about their experiences while he fought stage 2 bile duct cancer.
In an interview with “Good Morning America’s” Robin Roberts, aired on Thursday, Moss announced he would be returning to his role on ESPN’s “Sunday NFL Countdown” after taking some time off last year to focus on his health. Lydia mentioned that he relied heavily on her support during this challenging time.
“It was tough for me because he didn’t want our help. He’s always been independent, but I think he started to understand that we really needed him, even if he tried to push us away,” she shared.
Moss, now 48, discussed his health struggles in December, asking for prayers and revealing he was “internally fighting something.” Not long after leaving ESPN, he posted a video on Instagram where he identified himself as a “cancer survivor.”
“You know, you think you’re doing everything right—eating well, staying healthy—and then, out of nowhere, you get hit with a cancer diagnosis… It was overwhelming,” Moss recounted, reflecting on his initial reaction to the news.
He explained that doctors had conducted six hours of treatment after discovering the cancer around the pancreas and liver. Moss expressed gratitude in an Instagram video from December, acknowledging the support he received during his journey.
Now, two months later, Moss has made a heartfelt return to ESPN as part of their Super Bowl 2025 coverage. He was visibly emotional during a welcome back video that featured familiar faces like Tom Brady and Justin Jefferson.
“Y’all already know I’m a bit of a crybaby,” Moss said in February. “I can’t do this alone. I’m really thankful. It was tough, but I’ve got a lot of love around me and people who believe in me, so it feels great to be back.”
ESPN confirmed in July that Moss would officially return to “Sunday NFL Countdown” this fall, joining his colleagues Rex Ryan, Alex Smith, Teddy Bleeski, and Mike Greenberg.
“Randy’s return on Super Bowl Sunday was a significant boost for not just our team but the entire football community. Knowing he’ll be back for the full ‘Sunday NFL Countdown’ schedule starting in week one is a highlight for us all,” the network stated.
Moss, a four-time All-Pro selection, enjoyed a 14-season career, best known for his time with the Patriots and Vikings after being drafted 21st overall in 1998. He also had stints with the Raiders, Titans, and 49ers.
