OpenAI Partners with Walmart for AI Certification Initiative

OpenAI is once again making headlines with its recent developments in artificial intelligence. Following the launch of GPT-5, the company has unveiled a new initiative aimed at certifying individuals in AI skills, collaborating with retail giant Walmart to roll this out.

Fidji Simo, CEO of OpenAI Applications, noted that research indicates workers familiar with AI tend to be more productive, more valuable, and often earn higher wages compared to those lacking such skills. This insight led to the establishment of OpenAI Academy earlier this year, a complimentary online learning platform that connects over 2 million users with valuable resources.

Simo elaborated, stating that the academy plans to broaden its offerings to include various levels of AI certification, ranging from general AI usage to more advanced topics like AI customization and rapid engineering.

The ambitious goal? To certify 10 million individuals by 2030, with significant backing from Walmart, one of OpenAI’s key partners.

Walmart’s CEO, John Farner, emphasized the importance of human-driven training, remarking, “At Walmart, we understand that the future of retail isn’t solely about technology. It’s about people who know how to leverage it. By directly training our associates in AI, we’re equipping them with the necessary skills to adapt and thrive.”

Earlier in August, OpenAI introduced GPT-5, characterizing it as a substantial improvement over its predecessor and a significant advancement in the evolution of large-scale language models.

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, described the new model as akin to having a team of PhD-level experts readily available, considering it a major milestone toward achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI).

In conjunction with the certification announcement, Simo remarked, “To empower more individuals—not just a fortunate few—we must seize the opportunities AI provides across all levels.”
